A unique and compelling leadership opportunity to be the next
About Ottawa Riverkeeper
Since 2001, Ottawa Riverkeeper has served as a champion and collective voice for the Ottawa River watershed, providing leadership and inspiration to protect, promote and improve its ecological health and future. Ottawa Riverkeeper is a proud member of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a global network of over 300 organizations working to protect swimmable, drinkable and fishable waters. Are you seeking an exceptional opportunity to drive positive change in your community? Have you been called courageous and visionary? Do you see collaboration as the key to achieving impact? If so, you just might be the inspiring leader we’re looking for to hold the coolest title in town… as our next Riverkeeper!
As the Riverkeeper at Ottawa Riverkeeper, you will take personal and full-time responsibility for the protection and restoration of our local waterways. Your knowledge and passion will inspire others to join you, as you cultivate relationships and build coalitions with leaders from key organizations, businesses, government agencies and indigenous communities.
As the Riverkeeper, you will promote effective monitoring, assessment, enforcement, and long-term planning to protect the public interest of swimmable, drinkable, and fishable waters. Driven by curiosity and integrity, you will write position papers and opinion pieces, present before regulatory agencies, sit on expert committees, and network with scientists, policy experts, community leaders and decision makers. You will confidently serve as the primary spokesperson for our organization with the media, in presentations and at events.
Leaning on your science and policy expertise, you will lead Ottawa Riverkeeper’s work to assess our watershed’s health, which includes developing watershed health indicators. You will also monitor our waterways and report harmful activity, maintaining an on-the-river presence and liaising with the appropriate environmental enforcement agencies.
At Ottawa Riverkeeper, you will be joining a strong and dedicated senior leadership team, working in close collaboration with our Executive Director and Board of Directors. Together, you will drive strategic planning and program development and inspire the staff team towards an ambitious common vision. You will contribute to fundraising to achieve this vision.
Beyond our watershed, you will have the opportunity to step up as a leader within the worldwide community of Waterkeeper organizations, participating in and leading collaborative initiatives with partners such as Swim Drink Fish Canada and the Potomac Riverkeeper Network.
Ottawa Riverkeeper recognizes that there are different types of experiences which could prepare a leader for this opportunity – but the strongest candidates will have a few things in common. As our next Riverkeeper, you are a true team player and you value collaboration. You have a solid scientific background and understanding of water issues. You are a good listener and an excellent bilingual communicator. You have a proven track-record in senior management roles and partnership building. You are a strategic thinker and respected leader in your community. Most of all, your charisma and passion for the goals of Ottawa Riverkeeper are contagious!
We look forward to receiving your CV and cover letter to the attention of Mr. Geoff Green, Chair of the Board of Directors, at firstname.lastname@example.org. We encourage candidates to apply at their earliest convenience. Our new Riverkeeper would ideally start in their role at the beginning of 2019.
