Building a better Fisheries Act

Ottawa Riverkeeper recently co-signed a letter, along with dozens of other environmental agencies, urging the current federal government to make changes to the current Fisheries Act (which is currently under review). In it, we made multiple suggestions for restoring protections that had been lost during the previous government, as well as proposed modern safeguards for the Act moving forward.

In it, we made multiple suggestions for restoring protections that had been lost during the previous government, as well as proposed modern safeguards for the Act moving forward.

Finally, we recommended that a modern Fisheries Act needs to include protection of recognized and affirmed treaty and aboriginal rights that ensure healthy fish populations and habitat that will sustain these rights in perpetuity.
